Mentor Match Program
Applications are now open for the 2024-2025 Mentor Match Program!
Our mentorship program aims to support students navigating graduate school and fellowship applications in the Earth Sciences (including Ocean, Environmental, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences) through virtual mentoring. We match students with mentors based on needs, backgrounds, and interests.
Mentees apply here: 2024-2025 GEMS Mentee Application
Mentors apply here: 2024-2025 GEMS Mentor Application
Applications are due by September 30, 2024. Matches will be assigned by October 4.
Mentees
Mentees are undergraduate or recent graduate students seeking advice with graduate school and fellowship applications in US-based Earth science programs.
Mentees can request mentorship along two tracks:
Ruby Track: for individuals interested in going to graduate school in the future.
Sapphire Track: for individuals who are applying to graduate programs during the current application cycle.
Note: We are not accepting applications from international students who have never been enrolled in a US degree-granting program.
Mentors
Mentors can be senior graduate students, postdocs, researchers, staff, or faculty. Support for your mentee might include the following:
General advice on graduate school application process and timeline.
Guidance in career planning and professional development
Guidance throughout the graduate school application process.
Help setting and meeting personal deadlines for deliverables.
General feedback and editing of application materials.
Advice on interviewing, visiting, and selecting a graduate program.
Note: Mentor applicants not assigned in the first round may be matched in the second round. We do our best to match all applicants, but the number of mentee versus mentor applications can restrict the number of matches we make. Thus, we unfortunately cannot guarantee that you will be matched. If you are not matched, please feel free to reach out for an update and keep a lookout for future emails from GEMS that may include opportunities for you to still participate in a different role within the GEMS program.
